There are many famous families in the music industry, and among the most notable has to be the Marley family. Thanks to the musical stylings of reggae singer Bob Marley, many in the family tree have been able to make a name for themselves along the way.
One of Marley’s sons is Rohan Marley, who was born to Marley and Janet Hunt in 1972. Instead of going into music, however, Rohan would would take an interest in the game of football, where he became a member of the prestigious Miami Hurricanes college football team, leading the squad in tackles in 1993 as a linebacker. Marley wouldn’t make it to the NFL, but did play for a year in the Canadian Football League before leaving the game.
While in college, Marley was married to Geraldine Khawly, but the two would split in 1996, and Marley met singer Lauryn Hill. Hill, of course, was a member of the Fugees and a had her own successful solo career. Her voice was featured in hit songs such as “Killing Me Softly”, “Doo Wop (That Thing)” and “Everything is Everything”. Hill had just one solo album, and there are many people anxiously awaiting her return to mainstream music.
Marley and Hill would have five children during their relationship that lasted for more than a decade, including Selah Louise Marley in September 1998. It was the second child that the two had together, with Zion David being the oldest. Marley had custody of the children while Hill spent a couple of months in jail for tax evasion, but now Selah Marley is old enough to live on her own at 19 years old.
When you see Selah Marley, you’re immediately reminded that she’s indeed the daughter of Lauryn Hill, as they share an uncanny resemblance. While growing up, Marley knew what she wanted to do as a career path, and her passion laid in the fashion industry. Hill made sure that Marley would have to wait until she was finished with school before going through with her modeling aspirations.
Marley would finish up her high school degree and like many who’ve found fame at a young age, decided to go to New York University. However, before earning her degree, Marley made the decision to step away from school to focus on her career. Because of that, modeling opportunities came in fast and furious. “I got handed all of these amazing opportunities, especially travel opportunities,” she said. “College takes serious dedication – you can’t just half-a** it. Honestly, I don’t think I was ready for that.”
Now, Marley has a large presence on social media with more than 100,000 followers on Instagram alone, and is also aspiring to have a music career like her mother, sharing all of her thoughts with her fans. “I think that opening up on Twitter helps people see that there are things that I deal with that they can relate to,” she said. “Maybe it’s not exactly the same as having a famous mom, but maybe their dad puts pressure on them to be a doctor and they don’t want to be a doctor.”
For now, though, modeling has been more of a full-time job for Marley than music has. “I work on songs quite often, but I don’t know what it is – part of me can’t fully commit (to music),” she said. “Part of me is held back by what other people will think of me and the shoes I have to fill. I’ll just have to take my time. Music is my ultimate passion in life. You will definitely hear something from me.”
With that, Marley would finally release her first single in 2017 with the song “Breathe”. Though the song wouldn’t register on the Billboard charts, it helped to kickstart the musical career from Marley that seems to be far from finished. “My music is super vulnerable, raw and intimate,” she said. “For me, music is a very unconscious thing. It’s something I just feel, I just do…In terms of genre, I would probably put it on a R&B soulful tip.”
Even if she never becomes the most famous model or singer, Marley will be happy if she’s able to express herself. “My plan is to give myself the space and a platform to freely express my creativity,” she said. “I have a million things I want to do, so right now I’m interested in creating a home for all of these ideas…I just want to show people that the best thing you could ever do for yourself is be yourself.”
At just 19 years old, Marley has already accomplished a lot, and it appears that the potential for her career is through the roof. She leans on her mom, who she says is her “best friend” for inspiration and how to handle fame. She still listens to her mother’s music on a near-daily basis, and has learned to take her time as a musician and not rush things. “It feels like you have to keep up, because you always feel like you’ll be forgotten,” she said. “(Lauryn Hill) always told me to chill. I don’t ever want to do anything because I feel like I need to and that’s why I feel like I’m an anomaly in the industry.”
